I had a water leak and a bill that will cost me $931 for 200,000 gallons of water . The leak was fixed the same day it was found on December [login to view URL] previous month's bill had been $49. I have roughly figured that is that leak has started on Nov. 28 and leaked for a month that would be around 6666.66 gallons a day. My math problem that I'd solved is... the 1" pipe buried 3 foot underground was found to have a hole about 3/8 inch in diameter where the water was leaking out. The area where the leak was located should have been a swamp, but wasn't. About 20 grown bulls congregate in that area should have sunk up to their shoulder in mud and muck , but they didn't. Is it possible for 200,000 gallons of water to pass through a 1 inch pipe with a 3/8th hole in 30 days. I don't think that the leak had been leaking for 30 days that is just a guess. Hope someone can figure this out for me , before the city makes me pay this huge bill. One more thing the meter's needle is stationary at 4 1/2 gallons ..not 0 when no is being used. Thank you for any help MClem

Hi, I totally understand your problem. I am a final year undergraduate from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, one of the most premium engineering institutes of India. Your problem not only needs mathematics but also physics which includes the velocity of efflux. I can tell you how much quantity of the liquid could have flown out in a month from that whole. Please consider my proposal as I believe I am the best fit for this job. Thank You

From my quick initial calculations, based on what you described, assuming it was leaking through the 3/8-inch hole for 30 days, the flow rate would be 9-10 mph This could be within the range of possibilities depending on the water pressure. If the soil around the hole is dry and porous, potentially it could absorb the water
