First pass for the specs for a generic log-reading script. The idea is to create a general purpose log/text reading script that can be reasonably configurable and usable for different purposes. PERL is probably the best language for this.
1) Parse text files for a specified string.
2) It will create new files as needed to hold the outputs - to a specified folder.
3) There should be a choice of: (a) specifiy the string to be looked for; or (b) specifiy the positions in the record to begin and end reading.
4) In either case, the line of text between the delimiters should be copied out to the files and appended as needed.
5) The record delimiter should be selectable - comma, semicolon, tab, carrage return/linefeed, carrage return, other, etc.
6) All these inputs should be configurable from a user interface. Can be web-based or application based. Choice at setup time would be great.
7) Outputs should be selectable and displayed from the interface.
8) Runs on Windows 2000 server or linux.
9) Some simple stats about each file when displayed on the interface: Name; size in KB; number of lines; creation date; last update date.
10) The file name should include the string selection info and a sequence number.
11) It is selectable to read one source file or all files in a folder.
## Deliverables
