Looking to launch a series of sites similar in nature and functionality to Texts from Last Nightand FMyLife. So this would be a template that would be easily customizable (colors and titles, not layout; layout can be fixed), preferably just by changing a few things in the CSS file or logging into an Admin panel on the site (similar to Wordpress). As for design I'd like (from top to bottom):
Header (950 pixel width):
I'd like a thin strip (~20 pixels height, extending width) up at the very top that links the sites together (similar to People of Walmart). Centered, text based links, elastic dimensions, with two color combos: one for link/visited, the other for hover/active.
20 pixels top and bottom margin for: An area for a horizontal banner ad (centered).
An area for a logo (likely same level as the main menu navigation but to the left - some flexibility with where the logo can go, and whether it's text or a picture).
A menu (40 pixels tall by 950 wide, rounded edges; top and bottom margin of 20 pixels) like Texts from Last Night (spry? - buttons off to the right): Home, Best XXXX(5 categories to be named), Worst XXXX(5 categories to be named), Submit, About, Contact
Content area (650 pixels wide, flexible height but fixed number of posts per page - changed in admin page):
Bottom of content area should have page navigation similar to Texts from Last Night; clean, attractive, and clearly visible.
Individual Posts
Each submission has its own box/div/your choice, similar to a blog, 620 pixels wide with 15 pixel margin and 10 pixel padding all around, and different background color.
There should be voting added to every post; thumbs up/down works and/or text I can edit next to each.
Comments link goes to page devoted to just that post, with comments section and form - must be signed in to comment. Comments don't need to be approved - live posting.
Also, room for a sharethis or addtoany button.
If possible, I'd like there to be options on what the border for each post looks like (one thought bubble option and one plain square with thin solid dark border, and background of post should be slightly off container background)
Sidebar (300 pixels wide): all fields should have 15 pixel margin on top, right, and bottom, with 5 pixel margin on left.
Search by keyword.
Log in field with register link.
Best XXXX by tag.
Worst XXXX by tag.
Top Submitters.
Room for an ad.
Footer:
Another ad area (top and bottom margin of 20 pixels).
Absolute bottom: 20 pixels height, same color as very top header. Copyright XXXX 2010. Powered by XXXX (link to your site)
Submit Page: all fields required unless I disable them. All submissions must be approved.
Name and e-mail field (bypassed if user is logged in)
Title/Caption field
story field (I can turn on/off and set max characters)
checkboxes for tags (at least one, but multiple okay)
submit picture field (I can turn on/off. Pictures sent to an e-mail address)
Captcha - not required if user is signed in
I have read and agreed to the disclaimer check box - lorem ipsum for now
Register/Join Page: All automated. No moderation required for sign up
name and e-mail field (required)
username (unique)
password set up
Captcha ex: 4 + 1 =
I have read and agreed to the disclaimer check box - lorem ipsum for now
About
same layout, just content area has no fields. Lorem Ipsum placeholder text.
Contact
same layout, but content area has a contact form
name
e-mail
text
nature of contact drop down menu (advertising, suggestions, complaints)
Captcha
submit button sends form to e-mail address
Admin page:
control advertisements
moderate submissions
post new content
moderate/delete comments
manage/contact users; ban users/IPs and track how many posts/comments they've published
give certain users ability to live post
change color schemes
turn on/off photo uploading on submit page
manage tags
As much control as possible should be in the admin page, much like Wordpress
Overall, I like the look, style, and functionality of textsfromlastnight the best (rounded edges, subtle color fades, different background colors for body, container, and individual post, general layout, menu, etc.) However, I don't want it to look overly similar, and prefer to work with text based links and cut down on load time and total site weight. It must also be easy to change and customize, either by the Admin page or changing some of the CSS (accurate and logical naming of fields would be helpful).
