Marley & Me
Movie Review by Summer Felix
There are a handful of dog movies that can throw you into a whirlwind of tears, having you run straight home to cuddle up your furry love. Marley & Me is an undoubted addition to the collection of warm fuzzy stories. It’s a tearful feel-good family movie. It’s one of those that leaves you in your chair long after the credits have stopped, waiting for the theater to empty so you can compose yourself long enough to walk to your car. It has so much feeling and sentiment; you just might change your own life from watching it.
It’s adapted from the book Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog by John Grogan. John Grogan, played by Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers) and his new wife Jenny, played by Jennifer Anniston (The Break-up) take us through a period of 12 years in a memoir-like feel from the point of view of John Grogan.
In an attempt to avert his wife’s scheduled plan for a baby, John gifts Jenny with a “clearance” yellow Labrador puppy, convincing himself that it will be much easier than an actual child and a good diversion until they are both “ready”.
Grogan works at a daily paper in town. While his dream is to become a reporter, life leads him in another direction and he finds success as a columnist. As a result of his comical writings based on his experience with Marley, his “spirited” puppy, the paper’s audience grows and Grogan keeps landing promotions.
It’s a fabulous story that holds your attention and just about every emotion as you watch Marley grow from puppy to adult, causing about 100 times the trouble of an average dog.
The beauty of this movie is the way humor is used to attach you to these wonderful endearing characters and maybe allow yourself to empathize and learn along with a young couple figuring out how to be adults themselves and raise a family.
Better yet, the story creates hope along the way, as we go through the hardship of starting a family, surviving sacrifice, marriage, and parenthood.
The story has a common theme, which properly advocates the steadfastness with commitment to all things in life.
It’s a pleasant surprise to find Owen and Anniston do such a believable job in experiences that many of us are accustomed.
Marley & Me is one of those movies that will continue to remind us of all we have and all that we should cherish.
