Essay 2: Definition Argument
Assignment
We began in Essay 1 by analyzing and examining a single argument. And with Essay 1, we worked at identifying the lines of argument, the intended and invoked audiences, the purpose, and, ultimately, the effectiveness of the argument being analyzed. With Essay 2, you will take the first step towards crafting an argument of your own.
In this essay, you will choose your own topic--whatever interests you most--and explore it through the context of the definition argument (Good Reasons: Chapter 8). The length of this essay will be three to five full pages, minimum, accompanied by an MLA Works Cited page that includes a minimum of four quality sources, comprising a trustworthy and up-to-date knowledge base upon which you will support your argument.
These four sources should be carefully chosen and should reflect of a variety of different perspectives (in other words, not just sources you agree with). You are working to form a complete and objectively true portrait of your chosen topic. Demonstrate awareness of your personal biases (political, religious, socio-economic) and do not let them hijack and sabotage your argument.
Keep the long-term in mind: you may write about the same topic through Essays 3 and 4. The benefit of doing so is that you will already have a solid body of quality research set in place (of course, you may need to add or delete certain sources from your Works Cited page as you move along from one essay to the next).
Note: each essay is different, and you will not merely be making slight changes from one essay to the next, resubmitting the same work albeit tweaked a bit; each essay will be an entirely new creation. If you want to keep your topic constant through the remainder of the semester, you will still be writing a brand new, unique essay for each assignment. Maintaining a topic is not necessarily a shortcut.
Rubric
■ The introduction should have a clear and focused topic selection presented with a formal thesis early on in the proposal.
■ The definition argument should introduce at least three of the four texts and authors included in the Works Cited page. Important background and contextual information is expected to accompany source support inside the essay.
■ The Works Cited page should demonstrate variety: web pages, book excerpts, journal articles, personal interviews, newspaper & magazine articles, government documents, multimedia (film/music/TV), et cetera.
■ The essay should be clearly organized; a logical progression of thought shaping the construction of the definition argument is evident, as well as graceful transitions between each sentence, paragraph and/or section.
■ All argumentative claims made should follow with careful explanation and, when necessary, in-text source support.
■ The paper should be free of distracting grammatical and language errors.
