I really want a program that will produce a list of times at which goals were scored in football (soccer) matches.
This data is freely available e.g. ([login to view URL]), but I would like a way to turn it into a more useful format which can be fed into my gambling program.
## Deliverables
I like occasionally to gamble on football (soccer) markets, and I have a method for doing this. From the coders point of view, this is unimportant.
There is a difficulty in getting data without spending lots of time on manually entering it.
What I need is a tool that, for a particular football league, for a particular season, will produce a nicely formatted text file of the matches with the times at which goals are scored.
The text file should have as a minumum the date, Home team, Away team, the times at which the home goals are scored, separated by commas, and where the away goals are scored, separated for commas.
So, for example, the data for a particular day's matches in the English League 1 is here:
I would like this to be transferred into a file which outputs something like
Date;Home team;Away Team;Home Goal times;Away Goal times
03/05/2008;Brighton;Swansea City; ;78
03/05/2008;Carlisle United;AFC Bournemouth;56;68
03/05/2008;Cheltenham Town; Doncaster Rovers;24,76;85
etc...
I want to be able to just specify a season (e.g 2008-2009) and a league (e.g. the Spanish Primera division), for example by pointing at a URL such as [login to view URL] . There are other websites with the same data, such as [login to view URL] which you may use f you prefer, but I think the ESPN seems to have better data on it which goes back further.
For deliverables, I would like:
- a demonstration that it works by producing such a file (say for English league 2 2007-2008 season) and the Spanish Primera for 2008-2009
- the code, in some format that I can run on a linux pc. I would prefer perl, but anything considered.
I'm prepared to make an interim payment after the first deliverable, if this is indeed how it works; apologies this is my first specification.
I'm open to any other questions or suggestions.
Ben
Note to Americans and other non-Soccer playing countries: The british soccer season generally starts in August and runs till May/June. There are a small number of goals for each side per game. The game has two halves of 90 minutes, and the times of the goals for each side are published, as I describe above.
