Behavior tracking system for schools - modifying/updating/new development

I work for a small charter school and they use a behavior tracking system that tracks incidents, assigns consequences, and creates reports. The original system was a cumbersome set of excel spreadsheets which I thought would be a prime candidate for a web based database application. So, I learned php and mysql and put together a system that they started to use this school year. Now that we have a working application, there are other schools that are showing interest. So, we are forming a separate group to turn this into a product and market it. Part of this includes making the system look more professional, structurally sound, efficient, and secure. And, as I am not a professional web developer, I've based all my code on research found on the web for good ways to do this. We've decided that a professional appearance is most important right now for appealing to potential customers. This project is only for modification of the existing code for a professional appearance. Future work could include security enhancements, underlying structure modification, and interface re-tooling. Additionally, we plan to have further feature development to add more functionality and customization. Through conversation with many of you, I've realized that this portion of the project (creating a professional appearance) would be extremely difficult to accomplish in a timely/cost effective manner. I plan to cancel this current project and create a requirements document for the entire system. Once that is complete, I will post another project for the complete rebuild of the system which will include some extra features that we're planning to implement.
