Hello, my name is George Bouris. I have very good experience on the subject, because I have built a similar system, a couple of years ago. It supports up to 250 nodes to wireless communicate with the base station. The communication is 2-way, meaning that you can also send commands to the nodes to control relays or whatever. In addition, the nodes normally are in a "deep-sleep" mode (for minimum power consumption), waking-up in regular, user defined, intervals to report to the base station and accept commands. Regarding your project, I don't really see the reason for using an additional microcontroller on each node to send the data to the base station and then forwarded to the server. The ESP8266 module incorporates a powerful microcontroller and is very cheap, so you can build the nodes around it and allow them to directly contact the distant server through the router. This will reduce the cost and simplify the design. Also, LUA does not seem to me professional, I'd suggest C++ instead. Anyway, I can develop it either following your design or the one that I described above.
