Overcoming the havoc of Retail Chains entering India :
The Big Giants in the Retail sector such as Wal-Mart entering India have created a havoc among the local retailers who fear huge losses in their trade due to the entry of such retail chains. But the questions worth consideration are whether it is a boon or a bane for our country? Whether we should welcome or condemn the entry of these Retail Giants? Should this entry be compared with the entry of East India Company once which ruled the Country for years and years together?
If we look at it rationally , the big retail chains are certainly a boon for our country as they would give an employment opportunity to thousands of professionally qualified Retail management graduates who wish to give their significant contribution towards the growth of this sector. These retail chains also provide a safe and secured working environment to women and prevent the malpractice of sexual harassment at workplace due to presence of bouncers at such stores which is especially beneficial in developing cities like Allahabad where a less qualified female is highly susceptible to such exploitation at work place. Besides, the employees at such stores get an opportunity to work in an organized work culture where professionalism and sophistication play a major role which in turn will help in ‘Shaping the future of India by shaping its Youth.’
On the other hand, these retail chains due to less channel intermediaries provide value for money as well as offer wide range of standardized quality goods at cheap prices which increases the purchasing power of consumers who can ‘buy more’ with less money. These Retail chains also act as a ‘One Stop Shop’ for working executives who prefer to go for bulk shopping in order to save time. In addition , these stores are centrally located, have organized shopping and billing system, courteous sales staff, help desk, parking facilities and over and above they provide the opportunity of branded shopping even in small towns and cities.
What Indian consumers should realize is that these Retail Giants should be welcomed and treated as an opportunity for economic advancement of the country and not as a threat to local retailers as the local retailers have a certain competitive edge over the giant retail chains as the small retailers offer exchange of goods easily, no hassles of standing in queue for billing, money back in case of inferior quality goods, nearby location, fresh edible products such as milk, fruits, vegetables etc which are sometimes not available at big retail chain stores.
India should also not fear of being ruled by another ‘East India Company’ in the form of these retail chains again as the reason of East India Company ruling our country in the past was the weak internal political structure and conflicts among the Rulers that existed at that time and not the wealth that the Company generated.
To further reduce the havoc, the Government of India should try and maintain a balance between the earnings of the Retail chains and the local retailers by offering subsidies on the prices of the various products that are sold by the local retailers which will enhance their sales. The government can finance these subsidies out of the fund that it generates by way of the duties and taxes collected by these Giant Retail chains and hence maintain an equitable distribution of income and wealth among the local retailers and the big Retail Chains. This will certainly help in boosting up the economy and development of the nation as a whole.
