"Like human actors, commodities have stories of their own. They shape human existence, create new sets of interactions, cross time and space, and offer a unique and incredible lens through which to view history." I am exploring the hidden life of a specific automaton created by the Swiss mechanic Henri Maillardet in 1800 - the 'Draughtsman Writer'. This object's life cycle reveals a narrative about man's passionate desire to imitate life, serving as a visible turning point in industrialization and mass entertainment. I aim to show how this automaton is an exceptional example of the hybridization between science and art: it responds to both a tradition of fine art during the time of Rudolph II, and to the 18th century mechanization that becomes accessible to more than just the elite. I would need to look at the data processing of computers - an abstraction through the physicality of punch cards that becomes essential to industrial production - to the study the evolution of clocks. With clocks, life was no longer structured to natural light but rather artificial light. I would need a minimum of 10 pages and it would need to be done in under 24 hours!
