Contest Brief

I am looking for a designer to create UI for our web application (currently based on material-ui components).
This is a test assignment. If I like your design I'll be able to offer you more work.

Information about the system:
1. system has 2 types of entities: Racks and Equipment.
2. both Racks and Equipment have many properties, such as ID, Name, Type, Voltage, etc. Racks' and Equipment's sets of properties are different, but total number of properties is several dozens, so they do not fit in one screen if displayed all at once.
3. Types of properties are: Text, Textarea, Toggle, Numeric Input, Dropdown with single selectable option, Dropdown with multiple selectable options (can select more than one option at once).
4. Equipment can be assigned to 1 Rack (or stay unassigned). Single Rack can have multiple Equipment items.
5. max number of Racks is 10, max number of Equipment items is 100, so if you display them in a table, you don't need pagination.

For this assignment, please design a UI for users to manage the following:
a. view Racks and Equipment Items; if you decide to show them in a table, you don't have to display all properties, only the most important ones (table doesn't have to scroll horizontally).
b. assign Equipment to Rack; unassign Equipment from Rack.
c. select all Equipment items assigned to a particular Rack and assign them to another Rack; unassign all items from a Rack.
d. edit Racks and Equipment properties. Give your test properties any names, but in your design show me examples of all types from paragraph #3. In real system names can be from 3 to 50 characters long. Show me how you display dozens of options in one dialog.

The winner has been selected. I got several nice designs, but I was looking mostly for ideas and the winning entry showed many ways to organize and display data - exactly what I needed. Thank you all for participation.

Since the capacity of racks is not limited (they can contain dozens of items) it's not clear how you would show all items in the rack. The concept of slots that you have is a bit confusing. Also, it's not clear to me how you would show all unassigned equipment items. For example, user just created 100 of items and wants to assign first 25 to rack #1. How can it be done? Would I have to open that rack and use slots dropdowns 25 times?

To all contestants: sorry, I don't provide star ratings to make sure I get more diverse ideas. If I didn't provide any feedback and your entry is not rejected, that means I don't have any questions and think your design solves the described problem.

Hello! I have 2 questions: 1)May items or racks have images/cover pics?
2)What is the "vibe" of your app, like, should it have serious/professional or colorful/playful look?

      1. No cover images for either racks or equipment items.
      2. This is an application for engineers, managers and documentation writers. So I guess it's serious, but I am not sure what a playful app would look like though :)

We are not able to understand what exactly you need. Please consider making sketches to save time of yours and ours. You only need to make a few pencil sketches to show us what is in your mind actually. They don't have to be perfect, just give us a general idea.

My sketches would affect your creativity. Somehow few other contestants were able to get the idea, so it's definitely possible.

Another way to look at it is that there are bookshelves and books. User has many bookshelves and even more books and wants an app (web app in our case) to assign books to bookshelves. Both shelves and books have plenty of attributes, such as size, color, cover, author, material, erc. that need to be stored in the system.

Hello, I understand your concern about not sharing any screenshot but to be honest I didn't understand concept of web application. Maybe you can share something else to elaborate that?
