Contest Brief

Hi artist peoples,

We are looking for an illustrator for our upcoming fitness / strategy / trading card game Akushon. Last year we set out to make an exercise card game that kids really want to play. We wanted to insure that the exercises are an unavoidable part of winning while also being fun and not just an arbitrary action. We have succeeded in both of these departments and now we need a creative person to make the character art as unique and cool as the game play is. This freelancer contest will serve as a way for us to recruit the person or persons we can hire for more freelance work on all of our future art assets. (And yes, there may very likely be more than one award paid out and of course higher pay for future assets).

A little more about us and the project: Fitblender, a small San Diego fitness startup, is currently creating the kids fitness card game Akushon (ages 7-14), a game meant to help counter the rise in childhood obesity and or just to get kiddos more active, social and healthier overall while actually having fun. We plan to create and produce a small beta deck (or 2) and raise capital via crowd funding to eventually grow this little company into something big.

The style of art we are looking for: 3d / Basic Cel Shaded / Water color style art like the examples provided, maybe blended or made into what you like. Your creations shouldn't be armed to the hilt e.g. no need to have a million guns or multiple weapons. Not too cute and not too real life. We will provide the card blank so you can test a layout if needed. We do not own any of the "art examples" so please don't copy any of them. Use any of the descriptions below to create your vision of said character or if you already have something that fits feel free to submit it. All characters should be in a dynamic pose (designating some type of movement). You may submit a sketch to us before you continue to render your illustrations, if you have any doubts as far as the direction you are heading.

Pick any single one you like below and give it a go. All of these are part of a deck tribe known as"HuMech", a Mech based military.
Mech Wolf:- Robot/ Unmanned Mech,- Gets stronger in a pack,-has no weapons.
Mech Scout:- Robot,- Flying orb or drone of sorts,-Has no fighting ability.
Full Metal Jax: Robot/ Unmanned Mech,- Giant warrior mech and the best combatant in the deck - Has a large swordgun.
Mini Mech: Robot/ Small unmanned Mech,- Small and fast, May have more of a cute look but is still a warrior.

Man! Way too much quality entries, you've made it very hard to pick a winner. Though there can only be one winner we have decided to award 3 extra entries. Well, I have my top 3 artist and pieces marked w/ 5 stars. Don't stop refining your work, making it as close the the first "unnamed file" in the examples as possible. I already know only one of you can win the contest but I will work to give awards to those who come in the top 3 also.   That was totally great to come home to after a long day of work! I can't say anything but good things about today's entries. onepointsix, the only thing I would ask is you to do is make a thick black outline like the cel shaded examples. Not that your work needs any changes but I would love to see it if you can do it easily and or before tomorrow.

  I do appreciate the input. We really only intended this contest as a way to find the artists we would hire for future work. If all we come away with is concept art, that's fine as the artists will get something for their time and we get cool art. Stolen work is obviously not cool and Freelancer is supposed to insure against it but I'm sure you artist have seen some horrible theft.

  Good to know, I figure you as the artist know quite a bit on how to use this networking/gig platform. To be fair we are using other methods on top of this one to find the right person or persons for the gig. Like I said, paying a hand full of artists to create for and or inspire us seems worth a little hassle.

  Thanks so much milton48! Keep your eyes open for a kickstarter under Akushon in the near future. We think we stayed true to our MtG and gamer roots while making a completely new and fun game. Even with our lower age target demo we tried to made sure that teens and adults would love it too. I play it every other day with my co creator and we are by no means bored of it. And that's just a single deck mind you.

  I guess you get why we are using the "contest" onepointsix. We want to pay for good art but find the right artist or artist without spending for art we didn't want or waste time. We felt this was a good way to start an interview in a way.

  @ FitnessGenius as a gamer i don't like the graphic sample if you would do a game with that sort of graphic .. i don't think i would love to play it .

  The art samples are from others works. We hope to find a creative mind to create a style we can use as our own. I don't know that we intend to make the art the only reason people play the game Bogdan, also are you a 7-14 year old? That's our target demo.
