Contest Brief

Hi,

I was lucky enough to find a really old map that I think shows the area where I live (it's so old I am not even sure). The map is safely stored away in the archives of my local authority, which is great, but I really would love to see it on the wall in my house. I have funded the physical restoration of this map by the team at the archive who have kindly sent me several high resolution photographs. Now I would like a professional prepare a print ready copy to get me another step closer to realising my dream.

I do not want/need the map to look unblemished but I would like the detail to be clear and the folds or any obscuring marks to be smoothed out. Essentially I would like this to look like the awesome old map that it is in real life, only after it has been printed.

My priorities are:

1. Detail is clear
2. Retains character
3. Prints nicely

I do not want every slight blemish removed, I do not want it to look like new.

Any questions please ask. Full size versions of the map before and after physical restoration are provided below.

"Example" - This is a low resolution small file size copy of the map so you can check it out without downloading the big version.
"Original" - This is the map as it was before anything was done to it.
"Flattened" - This is the map flattened under a piece of glass, done before any restoration work.
"Flattened and Restored" - This is the map after the work to restore it was completed, this should be the best copy.
"Restoration process" - This is photo taken during the restoration process, added just for interest.

Hi everyone. I have awarded the prize!

I am really sorry to those who have entered and been unsuccessful. I have been overwhelmed by the response I have received and the quality of entries has been really very high. There are several of you who have produced work I would be happy to hang on my wall and several entries were close to perfect or it felt like they would have got there with some more revisions.

However, I received one entry that to me looked perfect - I can't see anything I would change so it didn't seem fair to continue to run the contest after that point.

Thank you all so much and best of luck in the future!

Hi everyone, I have had some really great responses today. Much more than I expected so thank you all very much. There are a few things I seem to be saying a lot so here they are for everyone.

    - I don't want the background and all colouration removing
    - I think the map will look better with the water marks and other major stains or damage lessened or removed
    - Reshaping the map to be squarer and have less signs of creasing / less uneven would be an improvement

I will add anything else as it comes up.

Quite a few entries have applied some kind of filter or process to the image as a whole. I don't have a problem with this but I am looking for more by the way of restoration than I think an automated process is likely to achieve on it's own. Thanks again!!

Probably "Flattened and Restored" as that has had the most work done on it already.

I was asked about the water stains, I think the map would look better without them or with less of them but this is not a deal breaker.

Hi, I have added the full resolution picture which is 6117 x 5378. I don't have a better version than that. Check out "Flattened and Restored.jpg" and let me know what you think.
