Contest Brief

I am the owner of an apartment building that was built in the early 1950's. It's design is overly simple and very "motel-like". Seeking someone to present a couple of new facade designs based on certain parameters. The building itself is a single-plane building face with a length of 250ft, and 6 entrances with canopies, and a very low pitch roof line. My goal is to give the building a modern (gearing toward craftsman style) look by creating the illusion of different facade depths by utilizing different siding textures and colors, but not making any structural changes due to cost constraints. The design should include readily available materials and generally looking to use clap board, cedar shake shingles, stacked stone while integrating the existing brick on the lower half of the building. The only structural additions that I would consider would be dormers on the roof. Though I am primarily concerned with the building facade itself, I would potentially be interested in over-all site concept design with rendering in 3D that would depict the parking lot, a sidewalk, and landscaping and exterior lighting.

  I apologize if you see it differently. I don't make it a habit to tell people "It's just wrong", without telling them why. I supposed I could have stated that I didn't like a particular design, but inevitably that would lead to more questions on what it is that I do like - in which case I feel that I have already explained what I was looking for in the initial contest description ( and unfortunately wouldn't have had time to respond to all entries). Keeping in mind this was a contest for original designs it would seem counter-intuitive to guide all entries toward the specific vision I had in my head. I apologize again but really do appreciate your time and your contribution

  The building is currently used for student housing. The market is located next to a very well known university and there have been significant developments of new and very modern properties that we now must compete with. We are trying to take this building and make it look like it wasn't built over 60 years ago to keep pace with our competition.

  I have updated the photos to be in jpgs. I am sorry I do not have the original CAD files for this drawing. One thing to note about the CAD drawing is that the roof pitch depicted is substantially greater than reality. Comparing it to the photos, you can see that the visible roof area should be roughly half of what is drawn. Pitch is about a 5" rise per ft.
