I am the gardening editor for [login to view URL] and enjoy writing about gardening, other household topics, pets, and parenting. In addition, I have written several hundred keyword articles for various sites. Pasted below is a sample of my work. The keyword for this article was compost. How to Compost for Beginners The compost pile can raise strong emotions in serious gardeners. They will whip out complex recipes and discuss the perfect bin. They will argue the merits and drawbacks of shredding versus chopping and hand turning versus automated turning. All of this complicated stuff often scares off beginning gardeners. However, before you decide that composting is too scary for you to try, remember that the earth has been composting all by itself for thousands of years. The bare minimum you will need to compost is a piece of chicken wire, a pile of leaves and grass clippings or animal manure, a little bit of soil, and a pitchfork. In fact, if you only have leaves and chicken wire, you can still make a compost pile. It will just take a year or two to break down. Make a circle out of the chicken wire. Ideally, it should be about 4 feet across. Pile in a few feet of leaves. If you have time and energy, run over them with a lawn mower that has a bagger attachment to shred and collect them in one easy step. Toss in your left over grass clippings, squash plants, or other green stuff. Avoid weeds, since they will put a lot of seeds in your compost. Toss in a few inches of soil. Add a foot of manure if you have it. Top off with another few feet of leaves. Moisten your pile and then leave it for the winter. You can check it once or twice to see if it is heating up. It’s always exciting to feel a hot compost pile in chilly weather and know you are actually doing something great for your garden with the stuff you would have dumped in the landfill. In the spring, get out your pitchfork and mix your compost pile up. You may find that the stuff on the bottom is already broken down. You can sift out the big chunks and toss them back in the pile and use the broken down compost to start your garden off right. Make sure your pile is still moist (Not soaking wet.) and leave it to continue breaking down. As you start to get new material to compost, make a new bin right next to the original one instead of tossing fresh material on the old one. The new material would slow down your old compost pile. Is all this too complicated still? Chop up some leaves, mix in some manure and your old veggie plants, and rototil the entire mess into your future garden. Nature will break it down and get it ready for planting in the spring. Once you find out how easy and fun it is to compost, you can make all sorts of terrific compost bins. However, no matter how fancy your bin is, the important thing is that you are making a wonderful source of nutrients for your garden.
