Male song sparrows have elevated testosterone in response to neighbors versus strangers

Hormones and Behavior
We were interested in whether males differed in testosterone levels in response to a familiar or unfamiliar intrusion from a conspecific bird. We simulated intrusions using familiar and unfamiliar stimuli. I wrote a scientific article, collaborating with multiple professors and graduate students from 3 different universities. This was the first study to investigate testosterone response to familiar and unfamiliar intruders and opened up a door for future research in this field.

Male song sparrows adjust dear enemy effect expression in response to female fertility

Animal Behaviour
We were interested in whether male sparrows altered their behaviour to conspecific birds with regard to their mate's fertility status. I conducted field work observing changes in male behaviour when females were fertile or not fertile. This was the first study to investigate changes in conspecific interactions over female fertile periods. We showed male behaviour is not static over a breeding season.

Large vocal repertoires do not constrain the dear enemy effect

Animal Behaviour
We were interested on the effect song repertoire size had on interactions between neighbouring birds. I conducted an experiment and synthesized information from over 40 studies to conduct an in-depth meta-analysis of the phenomenon we were studying. I wrote a scientific article detailing the background, methods, and results of our study. This study overturned long-held ideas about the effect song repertoire size can have on conspecific interactions
