Democracy Lab is an NSF funded project and we are looking to hire a Shiny App developer.
The project Democracy Lab will create a public-facing web-based tool for re-examining large questions about change over time in any democratic body of debate. Democracy Lab is being designed around nineteenth-century texts from Hansard's Parliamentary Debates of Great Britain, but the software will be designed such that we can afterward "plug in" any other body of debate, whether the EU Parliament, the Canadian Hansards, US Congress, New York City Council Minutes, local school board, or water board.
We hope to hire you to develop a visualization-based interface that will allow users to examine three major facets of parliamentary speech: the speakers themselves (their favorite words, their party, their constituency, how each changed over time), language (including top words, placenames, abstract vs. material speech, named entities, and grammatical expressions), and change over time itself (including moments of greatest rupture and aggregate change over time).
Our app developer will be working alongside a website developer and API developer. The app should interact with a backend database containing textual and quantitative data. The app developer will be asked to produce visualizations such as a dynamic visualization of top speakers within the 19th-century in which the user of the site can toggle view options.
Required Skills: proficiency in R and Shiny or Java and creating visualizations from Java.
