Your task is to determine the average age of kindergarteners in a classroom. You have three five year olds, two six year olds, and two seven year olds. If you used mean, you would add up the numbers and divide by the n, or total number of students. The age of the children would be 5.85 years old. This is not a very useful outcome as most children do not consider themselves to be a fraction of an age, and the educational materials you prepare for your students do not cover year 5.5 to 5.9. If you used mode instead, you would know the most frequently occurring age is five. You could use this number, though you would be using a number that does not represent more than half the class. Another way of looking at the data is to determine the median. To do so, you would organize the numbers like this: 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 7, 7. Then, you would find the midpoint. That midpoint number is six. Many would agree that this number would be the most useful to use because it seems to best represents the range of ages.
