I've setup a few custom post types and templates for displaying them. The child theme - I'm a bit worried about how much customisation you've done on the parent theme, we'll need to discuss this. If it's an active site i suggest I copy over to my server where we setup and test before moving back to your server, some themes are also glitchy on switching to child when the parent has been customised so this gives us a nice safe area to work on instead of directly to live.
