Fix formatting of <input> values so that they can be submitted to db

I have a web page that displays a series of numbers from the db in input boxes, formatted to eliminate decimals and separate 000s using commas. However, if the value is not changed, when the form is resubmitted the values are read as text and either partially submitted or not submitted at all. I need to preserve the nice output formatting, but have the default values resubmitted in their original state without the formatting.
