Add Tags or Categories to Woocommerce variations

I have setup my store to mostly be made of variable products, but they differ enough that I want them each to show up on the shop page. I have figured out how to do this and it is running well. The problem comes when I want to filter them. All the taxonomy information is inherited from the parent product and so there is no way to differentiate the variable products for their siblings. I would like you to add the ability to add either or both tags and categories to individual variations in such a way that a filter can separate them out.
