Magento: No console in download manager, won't upgrade1.7rc1

Hello,
I have a magento 1.7.0 alpha store and would like to upgrade to 1.7 rc1. However, when I go to the connect manager and select the options to upgrade, I get an blank console at the bottom. I click commit changes and nothing happens. I have tried it with IE, Chrome and Safari. It has been like this since I installed it.
OKay, I had one programmer look at this and said it was not a server issue. Unfortunately they did not know how to fix the issue. I am on a VPS.
