For this project, you will consider how the principles of sustainable development inform management techniques in commercial building services projects. You will investigate low and zero carbon technologies and analyse their application in practical building services projects. You will explore the context within which building services engineering can contribute to overall carbon reduction. Aims or project: To investigate the environmental consequences of energy use in buildings with particular reference to building engineering systems and services.  To critically evaluate the environmental and economic benefits which are consequent on the specification of various building engineering systems and appropriate low and near zero carbon technologies.  To examine processes for the assessment of building energy loads at feasibility and post construction stages. Chosen candidates should be able to; - Evaluate the practicality, appropriateness and energy use implications of various types of building engineering systems which are used to control the internal environments of buildings.  Evaluate the practicality of various low and zero carbon technologies in different construction scenarios.  Investigate strategies for obtaining optimum building performance by passive means.  Critically examine the energy and environmental performance rating of buildings and make comparisons with established performance indicators and targets.  Investigate processes for waste heat recovery in building systems and energy generation plant. Project requirements & deliverables: This project considers the sustainable implications for the design and management of building services systems. a. With the aid of dynamic simulation modelling (DSM) software (IES or anything similar) - I. Determine the boiler rating for a selected building (will be provided to you later). II. Prepare a schematic diagram / graph which indicates how the load varies through the heating season in comparison to boiler output b. Based on the comparison of boiler rating and variation in heating load, prepare a brief guidance note on boiler plant sizing and operational control. c. Determine the seasonal energy requirement for a heating circulating pump which has a variable speed function based on constant pressure control with: I. Constant pressure sensed at pump II. Constant pressure sensed at remote sensor Data: system pressure drop 140 kPa Average rate of pressure drop 350 Pa/m d. Explain the role of differential pressure control valves and pressure independent control valves in variable flow systems (500 words) e. Discuss the concept of over-sized plant, capital and operating costs (500words) The above "requirements & deliverables" need to be documented in a report format (including references) It may not be possible for all candidates to access IES and therefore I will (later) provide a table which indicates the demand ( KW) and the period (hours) for which each particular demand occurs. Some candidates may prefer to use their own software to determine the relationship between demand and time. Those who do not have access to simulation software can use the data I will provide later.
