STRATEGIZING A COMMUNICATION MESSAGE 1. Understand the value of strategizing a communication before delivering it (i.e. the value of thinking and planning before ones speaks or writes). 2. Develop skills to strategize a communication and advise another on your strategy. 3. Strengthen skills for planning an effective communication. 4. Increase awareness of corporate culture on personal values and opinions. Background: Assume that you were back in 2011 and your team was mid-level Groupon management working on the proposed IPO. The Form S-1 letter to potential investors had not yet been sent and your team was assembled to work together to develop the message that Groupon would deliver in the Form S-1 letter to be signed by Andrew Mason. Assignment: Prepare a written strategy for effectively communicating Groupon’s message to potential investors in a Form S-1 letter. (You are NOT writing the letter.) You are creating a plan/strategy for the most effective communication of the message. You are writing out your thought process. Decide who you are as the writer -- are you part of an internal communications department, an executive at Groupon, the CEO, etc. This is important when assessing your credibility with the audience. Do not forget about unintended audiences. Make sure to indicate who you believe they are and how that changes your strategy, You will be evaluated on the quality of your written work, both as to content and style, and your ability to think the assignment through carefully and thoroughly and to express yourself in clear, concise and grammatically correct, Standard English. You may use an outline format with bullets to convey the components of your strategy.
