In March 2010, President Obama signed into law historic health care reform (referred to as the “Affordable Care Act/ACA” or “Obamacare”). The law has had its share of challenges but, seven years later, many Americans have come to rely on many of its provisions. However, the future of the ACA is rather uncertain under the new Trump administration. Provide some background on the ACA and some of its notable protections and features. 2. Most Americans rely on employers to provide health coverage (although some qualify for government-based coverage such as Medicaid and Medicare). Despite the many reforms, the ACA did not do much change the delivery of health insurance—in other words, more than 150 million people still receive employer-provided health coverage. What are some of the many provisions in the ACA that the “repeal or replace” efforts under the Trump administration could undo. Although changes may come in stages, do you favor efforts to repeal or replace parts of the ACA? Which ones, in particular? 3. Do you agree with the way the United States provides health coverage to its citizens? What are your views on a single-payer/government-run system that takes insurance companies out of the picture? Do you think that type of system is even possible to implement in the United States? 4. In most developed countries around the world, there is some mechanism to provide universal health care. Is access to basic health care a right of every individual? Or should health care be treated like any commodity—available largely to those who can afford it?
