Medical knowledge is a large mountain. Most people circle around the base trying to sprint up (memorize) every once in a while. This works for some people, on small mountains. However, to scale a large mountain such as the Everest that is medical knowledge, you must have tools for breathing or you will be overwhelmed. The same is true for learning medical knowledge. The first tool for scaling the medical knowledge mountain is the language of medicine. If you want to scale a mountain you must learn the language of the people who are scaling it with you so you can communicate and work together as a team. If you can read a word and understand it, even at the very basic level, you will be on your way to understanding medicine. One way to learn the language is by tie everything you already know about the word to its meaning using mnemonics.

Mnemonics are a way of remembering something you want to learn by tying it to something your know very well. Our brain will struggle to form new connections. For example, if i take a long word i.e. "crainiosynchondrosis" you may feel lost and overwhelmed. Tackling this concept however, is as simple as recalling what you already know ie. reinforcing old memories with new ones. Think about the word CRANIOSYNCHONDROSIS. Its a long word. It may seem difficult to understand, at first. But now, lets break it into pieces. Many of you probably know what a cranium is. Its the bone in which sits your brain, or your skull.

Therefore, we will use our lifetime of knowledge about the skull that has already been struggled through to approach this new word.

We will use the previous example, CRAINIO-synchondrosis, or skull-synchondrosis. Now think about the word "syn-chondrosis". You probably havent heard this word before. Its a connecting, or "syn" and chondrosis "cartilage". So the full term cranio-syn-condrosis, is cartilage connection two pieces of bone in your skull! Now just for clarification, cartilage is what forms your long bones and you have a CRANIO-syn-CHONDROSIS connecting the bones of your skull. This cartilage gradually thins and dissapears when your 18-25!

A very simple but useful way to view large words like this is chopping them up into little pieces and googling the little pieces. Then you can have a better understanding of any word!

As you continue to learn words they will become integrated into your mind.
