**Background**
I am responsible for a several hundred standalone computers all containing identical software but installed in remote locations. All machines have a matching hardware spec. running Windows XP professional with Intel Pentium D processor (Min 2.8 GHz) and Min. of 1GB RAM. Every machine has Internet connectivity although I-Net Protector, a program which controls which services and applications can access the Internet and CA Security Suite is installed for firewall and anti-virus protection etc.
Install-block, a program which provides password control of new software installation is part of the software package and this is installed to ensure that foreign software cannot be installed by users which include vulnerable children. Other applications include M.S. Office suite, a PDF Creation utility, Adobe reader and AutoCAD drawing viewer. .NET framework V2.0 is also installed on most machines.
**Automatic Update Service**
To avoid the need for repeated site visits above I need a facility whereby patches such as that described above can be loaded onto a server and then applied automatically to machines without operator intervention. This would be very much in the same manner as Windows Update, CA security suite updater and many other programs work.
What I envisage is a client which would be installed on each machine and periodically check a server for updates. If it found one it would automatically download and install it.
