Add new Joomla Component

Currently i have joomla 1.0 installed in the server. (I think) If you have to change the version I don’t mind you can do so, bear in mind I have a joomla template on the live site which I am currently using, along with contents uploaded on the site. Please let me know if the template and the contents can be preserved. ? 1 ? Upgrade Joomla 2 ? Add new real estate component 3 ? Preserve current data and templates ?
