Create a handy calculator tool for my website that will tell the customer how much yarn they need to buy. There is a tip page already on the site that explains how to do this math. I already have a calculator that determines how much fabric you need if you change the stitch count. So use that general format and colors, but follow the instructions from the website. The tool needs to fit in the same type popup box as the others. Here's the link to the general tips page. [login to view URL]
The existing fabric calculator is found by clicking on Tip 4.
The instructions on getting how many yards you need to cover a canvas are in Tip 3. The instructions on figuring out what to order are in Tip 1.
Here's the progression: I'd like the calculator to ask the customer the dimensions of the canvas, the stitch type (basket weave or continental). Then calculate yarn needed in yards. Yarn needed is 1 yard per square inch for continental, upsize 15% for basketweave.
Then determine how much yarn to buy. One knot = 8 yards. 9 knots = 1/8 pound. Once the number of knots goes over X, switch to 1/8 pound which is more economical. Do the math to determine when it's better to order 1/8 or 1/4 pound of the same color. (Knots are 85 cents, 1/8 pound is $5, 1/4 pound is $9) Remember all these are supposed to be for a single color, so the calculator might need to have an option to just key in the square inches of a single color, in case the stitcher has already added all the little sections together and just wants to go straight to the quantities.
