Autorefresh in asp.net

Hi coders I have a web app written in vb.net which needs a autorefresh feature..let me rephrase it feature which looks at the database every 5 mins or so and if there is anychange in the database then it updates the page or call a routine on a page. What I dont want is the page to constantly flicker every five mins. maybe there is some javascript which does this. for example the javascript fires up every three sec and if the db is chanaged then it puts a variable and calls a routine otherwise it does nothing. Something like MSN messenger.
