I have 5 years experience writing Java, including several network-based games and more utilitarian programs. I feel certain I can complete the network-based application you desire. My first question is in how exactly you want the client to communicate with the server. If I will be writing the client too, I will use TCP, and my own homegrown library-based versatile communications system, preventing any need to learn a new one (like HTTP). If I will not be writing the client, I will work to conform to whatever client will be used, up to and possibly including using HTTP if the client is to be a web browser. The biggest difference between the noted protocols is that HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol) is basically a momentary one-way download-a-page connection, while TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is an ongoing two-way communications link.
