Scenario You are newly employed as a construction manager of a large contracting company. Your role is to spearhead the construction aspect for the project, and to lead a site engineer to design any site temporary works as required by the site team. The Project is a mega Design & Build Housing Development project (HDB is the owner, Surbana is the Main Consultant, Main Contractor is ABC Contractor) which involves construction of 4 HDB residential blocks (Total 1,276 dwelling units, at different part of Singapore: Sengkang, Sembawang and Yishun) with 1 surface car park with landscape garden, community facilities, precinct pavilions and ESS. The potential contract sum is S$ 190 million and contract period is 40 months from the date of award to the contractor. As you had previous bad experience this current consultant, Surbana, the Consultant that manages the Civil, Structural, Architectural and M&E design works for the project; your Project Director wants you to perform the following tasks before the site team proceeded with the works. Assignment 1 You need to interpret the information provided in the soils investigation, to have a better knowledge of the design done by the consultants. You are tasked to check on the Electrical Sub-Station and Terrace Garden (External Works) to ensure that the Structural members are adequately design. Task 1 a) Briefly explain the purpose of the soil investigation, including why it is so essential to allow the design and construction process to proceed. b) Identify how this influences the design and construction of external works. c) Identify the recommended foundations for the Electrical Sub- Station and give the reasons why other options are unsuitable. Task 2 a) For the Terrace Garden, the drawing shows the location and difference in level, you need to suggest an economical solution for the series of varying height of surcharge for the retaining wall being designed. You have to check and ensure the ”buildability” factor (not too many retaining wall type for construction) is considered. b) You were asked by the site personnel to assist in designing the trench support, as the ground material is also a concern. Analyse the SI and report on precautions that will be required during trench excavations. Task 1 and 2 Max 2000 words Assignment 2 Task 3 With the given drawings from the consultants, you are tasked to check on the Electrical Sub-Station and Terrace Garden (External Works) to ensure that the Structural members are adequately design. You are required to show the checks on the worse scenario only.
