The blepharoplasty surgeon is usually trained in plastic surgery and may need to call in an Ophthalmologist if he runs into any problems. This procedure is used for sagging tissue or fat around the eyes. The best candidates for this type of surgery are men and women who are healthy and stable. They have a realistic expectation of what they want. Most people are around thirty five to forty or older. If you have medical conditions that are quite serious, check with your doctor before having the surgery. For the most part, if you follow the doctor's instructions, blepharoplasty surgeries can take years off the way you look. You will want a complete history and physical done before you think about surgery to help ward off any future problems. The cost involved is a major detail. Most insurance companies won't pay for this procedure unless you can prove the eyelid is blocking your vision. In 2005, the fees for this surgery were around $2900. This amount didn't include anesthesia, medical testing, miscellaneous expenses from the surgery, or any medicines you were given during surgery. Complications can occur with even the best procedures. Sometimes they won't be bad at all and you just need a few days to recover. Blurred vision is normal. Swelling and bruising in and around the eyes is quite often present after the procedure. You may also notice asymmetrical scars or healing in some places of the surgical site. You can have trouble closing your eyes at night due to the surgery. Be sure to cover your eyes with a sterile pad and tape them shut for the night. This will protect you from corneal abrasions. Address the issues with your doctor and come up with a solution that will work for you. Sometimes your surgeon will recommend treatment of blepharoplasty to people who suffer from Ectropion. This is a condition where the lower eyelids hang down further than they should. The surgeon will go in and take the excess tissue off and make the eyelid hang like it is supposed to hang. The blepharoplasty procedure entails incising along the natural lines of the lids. The natural crease in the top lid and right under the lashes in the lower one. These incisions will usually be taken out to the outer corners or the “Crow's feet.” The surgeon must completely separate the underlying skin from the muscle, tissue, and bone underneath. Then he will cut off the excess skin and fat. After this is done, he will pull together the two remaining pieces of skin and sew them together using very fine stitches. Sometimes the surgery is done on the inside of the lower lid and you can't even see the stitches afterward. These surgeries are usually performed in a hospital, in an ambulatory care center, or in the doctor's outpatient facility. All are made to meet certain standards with sterility and personnel. So there is no problem if you want to have it done in the doctor's office as opposed to the hospital. The surgery itself rarely requires for the patient to stay overnight. After the surgery is done and you are taken to the Recovery Room, you will start to wake up from anesthesia. You may find your vision is quite blurry. This is because the surgeon placed some antibiotic ointment in your eyes to help keep germs and microbes at bay. You may have a bandage over both eyes. It usually depends on the surgeon. When you get home, you will be instructed to keep your head elevated and to use ice compresses to help minimize any bruising. Your eyes may be sticky for a week or so, and the nurse will show you how to clean them. The eyes may also be dry and itch. You may find you are sensitive to light at first. After the first week or two, these should all subside gradually. Returning to work is always a day brightener. You can go back to work in about ten days looking forward to all the compliments you will receive. Although you may use makeup to cover some of the bruising, and you may need sunglasses if you are still light sensitive, you can get back to life looking and feeling a lot better.
