SINGAPORE
Located on southern tip of mainland Asia known as Southeast Asia it neighbours Malaysia to the north, Indonesia to the south and west and Philippines to the further east. It measures 40km by 20 km roughly 3 times the size of Washington and slightly bigger than Monaco.
Formerly known by the native Malays as Singapura it was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819. It later got its independence from Great Britain in 1963 and in 1965 from Malaysia.
Singapore has a population of about 5million people and comprises of ethnic Chinese that account for the majority, ethnic Malays and Indians account for the minority. There is also a huge foreign presence with immigrants from all over the world. Singapore citizens are known as Singaporeans.
Singapore has over time become an International hub and centre for business, Tourism, IT, Manufacturing and finance. It is an economic power in Southeast Asia and the world as characterized by having one of the highest living standards in the world, very low unemployment and inflation rates and is also one of the four Asian Tigers. Formerly founded and preferred for its location as a major trading port connecting routes from the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea right through to the Pacific it became an Important and busy port, infact one of the largest in the world and thus leading to rapid development.
Singapore Changi airport is the main port of entry by air. This award winning airport is a masterpiece of architecture handling close to 150 flights a day and connects flights to about 153 cities, it truly is a hub. Singapore airlines is the major airline with minor ones such as Tiger air and Silk air meant for shorter and low cost trips. Singapore airlines once voted the world’s most valuable airline has a fleet of about 120 planes and recently ordered 13 Airbus A380s from French aerospace maker EADS the biggest ever order for the priceless Super Jumbo jet. From Changi Airport one can take a taxi, bus or Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) a very efficient suburban train service that runs throughout the island city state to any part of the island. Other points of entry include Woodlands (Malaysian border) Harbor Front (to Indonesia) and also to Sentosa a perfect paradise and artificial Island which was built for tourism and has some best resorts and golf courses in the world.
Sophisticated infrastructure and a skyline characterize the Island’s city centre. With areas such as the City hall and Raffles place, these places are the heart of the city. The tall buildings would make you lose your way, The Singapore Flyer is the biggest in the world and can be seen from over 10 km away and so is the Singapore River that separates the old prehistoric buildings from the modern ones. Restaurants are all over the place and are open till late. Furthermore inland is Orchard Towers where the best places to dine and drink are, cinemas and malls are all there.
The official language of instruction is English and native languages such as Mandarin and Cantonese are still used. The Singapore dollar is the currency used and 1US$ = S$1.3
The weather is hot and humid throughout with temperatures ranging between 25C to 32C and humidity of about 80%. Carry lose clothing when visiting.
