Visual merchandising is one of the most important aspects of retail, because it literally involves the layout in terms of floor plans and displays for retail locations. Of course, given the fact that brick-and-mortar locations are being challenged by internet retail tremendously, as evidenced by the massive growth of Amazon, and the fact that it has a market capitalization of around $1 trillion dollars, visual merchandising is as important as ever to entice customers to explore retail stores and make purchases.
It can be described as either an art or science, and certainly requires some understanding of psychology, as the way that a product is presented obviously has a direct effect or impression on the consumer, the same way that a logo can help with brand identification/loyalty. It is a field that requires understanding the demographic of the consumer, and appealing to their beliefs and values.
Visual merchandising involves designing the layout of a retail store, and exploring lighting and music options that will help the customer be comfortable enough to want to explore the store, and thus make as many purchases as possible. It also includes photography,
signage, and displays, and works to augment the environment in a way that will lead to more revenue for retail businesses, which will lead to profit, which can help a business grow, expand, and create more jobs.
