Feng Shui (fengshui) is a Chinese originated pseudo-science that focuses on aligning an individual to their environment, and is considered one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics. In Fengshui, architecture is considered in terms of ‘invisible forces’ and aims to arrange buildings in an auspicious manner. As there are different methods of fengshui, this may be in reference to water, stars or orientation. For example, Shang palaces lie at 10 degrees east of true-north. Polarity is considered in feng shui, using the concept of ‘yin and yang’ to create balance. Traditional feng shui was originally focused on the location and orientation of tombs (yin) before moving onto homes (yang).

There is much controversy surrounding modern fengshui practices, particularly in the western world, with companies being considered too ‘gullible’ and uninformed, and so easily exploited. The practice is also still frowned upon by religious groups, Christianity being prominent in this. For those practicing classical feng shui, the modern expression may be considered redundant, as a watering down of culture of commercialized quick-fixes. Famous feng shui believers include Gwyneth
Paltrow, Johnny Depp, Cher and Bill Gates.

Businesses may use Feng Shui to show respect for Eastern cultures, or to promote productivity and motivation in the workplace.
