Our studio is working on a game about pirates and sailing ships. The project is 90% ready. The game consists of mainly sailing across many islands, which are already prepared and working. The problem is that we are not quiet satisfied with the quality of texturing for our world. Especially islands. We use texture splatting as our technique and so limited to maximum 5 textures per island (~200 islands, various sizes - from 100m to 1-2 km). The main problem is the alpha maps, which are used to texture them (grayscale images, one per layer/texture type). There is one base texture (like sand which doesn't require an alpha map) and 4 other textures (like dirt, grass, rock, etc.) which are used to make the island look like actually an island. Currently most of them look like sand or gras...
