Rotating wire globe

Contest Brief

I'm looking for someone who can create an animation where a flat earth projection is warped into a rotating globe.

Total duration: ca 7-10 seconds

Dramaturgy:
1) Static view of flat wire drawing, see eps attached. 2 seconds
2) animation warping the drawing into rotating sphere, ca 1-2 seconds
3) sphere continues to rotate, 2-3 seconds

Mockup visual of step 1 and 3 (camera should stay centered on map and globe throughout video)
https://www.dropbox.com/s/7ys5g0svdkdgykq/1-3.png?dl=0

– The flat projection is attached as eps below.
– More information on the dymaxion map here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dymaxion_map
– illustration where flat drawing transforms via a icosahedron into a sphere:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/egda8jjlftcjnao/Detail.png?dl=0
– The flat earth projection and rotating earth should be white lines on black background, similar to mockup visual above.
– the tricky part might be to align the lines of the flat drawing into a seamless sphere, so might require some adjustments of the illustrator file or morphing skills.
– earth rotation speed and perspective, use this for reference:
https://www.shutterstock.com/de/video/clip-2569064-wire-frame-globe-rotating-seamlessly-loops
(Please note that i'd like the lines to be spherically curved, unlike the reference video above)
– the wire of the flat projection and the rotating globe should maintain a consistent (tubular) stroke thickness.

Exported as a video for screen, ca 2000 px wide

If questions, let me know!
Thanks in advance.

There is a programmatic way possible (including/excluding 3D video editing software) but there is also pure 2D and projections too. If I have enough time today.

Hi Sergej, the programmatic approach is an interesting proposal and might be relevant for an other part of the project, can we chat briefly about this?

With programmatic approach I was referring to do the animation with scripting (pure e.g. WebGL/OpenGL or in video editing software) that seems to be in the winning entry - icosahedron animation being non-existing as required?

It requires quite a lot of scripting of projections anyway that are already solved with D3.js - using essentially 2D globe map projections - as I have shown you in the above Dropbox image (taken from a D3.js script visualization in a web page). The hard part is the immediate step of icosahedron - if it's not needed then animating AirOcean projection into a turning globe is a day or two job. For that I'm interested if you are.

Hi Justin M, thanks for submitting a first draft. However, please re-read our detailed briefing, as you're missing a number of items. Most importantly, that you're not using the submitted flat map as a starting point. Have a look again and let me know if you have anymore questions?
