Welcome to this new illustration contest!

My name is Craig and I work for an online educational company in Sydney. We are needing a front cover illustrated for a children's story book about a Spitfire grub which turns into a Saw Fly (an Australian wasp). Images attached below as to what they look like.

The main text and sub text (including written by etc....) will need to be added in also. The main heading 'SPIT' could possibly be illustrated too.

The front cover will need to capture aspects of the story so PLEASE read the full 13 page story attached to get a feel for the humour and the tone. We definitely will want to see the main character "the Spitfire grub" and possibly another character or part of a scene.

Alternatively, feel free to submit another page of this story of your choice as your entry in this contest. We are hoping to continue working with the winner of this contest at an agreed pay rate to illustrate the entire story.

About the Story:
The story ‘SPIT’ is a simple story about a Spitfire grub (named SPIT) who wants to return back to the tree branch with the rest of the bunch. He eventually makes it back up by flying as a wasp.

Intended Age Group / Audience:
Grade Prep / Kindergarten (ages 5&6)

Style:
The images can be playful and quite characterised for this age group. Interesting eyes, gestures etc
Please make the spitfire less "creepy" than how they look in real life! More friendly :)

Lots of colour. Can be sketchy or textured. Not too vectorised though.
...a likeable looking little grub.

Canvas size: 2500 x 1500 px
Final deliverable files: Procreate file, .psd or .eps / .ai. (Layers to be organised and clearly labelled so we may choose later to hide what we need. Eg. text layer etc.).

Feel free to submit a draft / rough outline concept if you would like some preliminary feedback. Happy to comment and help steer direction early for anyone who prefers to work this way.

Could be lots more illustration work to come if we can find the right artist to work with. :)

  Good question. We like the idea of seeing some texture in the illustrations similar to the brushes in photoshop - rather than it being too clean and vectorised. In saying that though, certainly feel free to submit an entry using illustrator if that is the software you use. Alternatively, procreate on the ipad is a great option for some people too!
