Contest Brief
I am putting on my first solo stand-up comedy show at the New Zealand Fringe Festival early next year. I need to provide the Fringe Festival with a "hero image" to be used anywhere that my show is mentioned - so for example on their website, in the Festival programme/brochure, or in any advertising.
This is the main image that will be used to represent the show, so the Festival have offered some advice on what it should look like...
- It needs to be eye-catching. There are a lot of shows on - the image needs to stand out and grab your attention.
- The image will be reduced down to approx 5cm x 5cm for the actual printed festival programme, so it can't be too detailed or "busy".
- It shouldn't contain any text (any info people need will be contained elsewhere. So this means the name of the show shouldn't feature in the image - no text at all is allowed).
So what does the image need to represent? The show is called "Born and Fled" and is based around me being Scottish and having fled Scotland in my late teens when I came out as gay to my family. My comedy uses a lot of references to my real-life experiences (but turns poor experiences into funny ones that should be laughed about). I talk about what it was like to be gay in Scotland in less liberal times, I joke about my family's bad reaction, and I talk about how I chose New Zealand as my new home (and it's where I'll be staying). That's me and what I talk about in a nutshell :)
A few folk asked for some pics of me so that they could include a caricature in their submission. That could work well, but in my mind I'm thinking more of images/symbols that don't have my face included. Just steering folk away from feeling I have to appear - unless the design is amazing I'd err on the side of not showing me in it.
